How to Use a Reed Diffuser: A Simple Guide

Reed diffusers are one of the easiest ways to keep a room fragranced throughout the day. Unlike a candle, there’s nothing to light or extinguish. The reeds slowly draw fragrance oil from the bottle and release the scent into the air, creating a continuous, subtle presence in your space.

Setting one up takes less than a minute. A few simple adjustments can also help you control how much fragrance it gives off and how long it lasts.

How to Set Up a Reed Diffuser

Step 1: Unbox Remove the diffuser bottle and reeds from the box.
Step 2: Remove the Collar Slide the black collar off the bottle and set it aside.
Step 3: Remove the Stopper Pull the stopper from the bottle. If it's snug, gently wedge a thin object underneath to help lift it, taking care not to spill the fragrance oil.
Step 4: Replace the Collar Slide the collar back onto the bottle for a finished look.
Step 5: Add the Reeds Place the fiber reeds into the bottle and allow them to begin absorbing the fragrance oil. The number of reeds you use will affect the strength of the fragrance. Start with fewer and add more if you'd like a stronger presence.

 

How Many Reeds Should You Use?

You don't have to use every reed at once.

For our diffusers, we recommend:

5–6 reeds: A subtle fragrance
6–8 reeds: A standard presence
8–10 reeds: A fuller fragrance

Room size makes a difference. A smaller bedroom or bathroom may only need a few reeds, while a larger living space may benefit from more.

Start with fewer and add additional reeds until the fragrance feels right for your space.

Do You Need to Flip Fiber Reeds?

Unlike traditional rattan reeds, fiber reeds are designed to wick fragrance consistently and don't need to be flipped regularly.

Once they're in place, you can largely leave them alone. If you'd like a temporary boost of fragrance, you can flip the reeds, but it isn't necessary for normal use.

If you do flip them, take care to avoid dripping fragrance oil onto furniture or other surfaces and wash your hands afterward.

Where Should You Put a Reed Diffuser?

Placement can make a noticeable difference in how a reed diffuser performs.

Choose an area with some natural air movement so the fragrance can circulate throughout the room. An entryway, bathroom, bedroom, living room or home office can all work well.

Avoid placing the diffuser directly in strong sunlight or next to a heat source, which can cause the fragrance oil to evaporate more quickly. Because fragrance oils can damage some finishes, always place your diffuser on a stable, protected surface and wipe up any spills immediately.

How to Make a Reed Diffuser Smell Stronger

If you'd like more fragrance from your diffuser, start by adding more reeds. More reeds allow more fragrance oil to diffuse into the air.

Room size and placement also matter. A diffuser will naturally have a stronger presence in a smaller enclosed room than in a large, open space, while gentle air circulation can help carry the fragrance through the room.

If you'd like a temporary fragrance boost, you can also flip the reeds, although our fiber reeds don't require regular flipping.

The goal isn't necessarily to make the fragrance as strong as possible. It's to find the level that feels right in your space.

How Long Does a Reed Diffuser Last?

How long a reed diffuser lasts depends on several factors, including the number of reeds you're using, the temperature of the room and where the diffuser is placed.

Using more reeds creates a fuller fragrance presence, but it can also cause the oil to be used more quickly. Heat, direct sunlight and increased airflow can speed evaporation as well.

If longevity is your priority, start with fewer reeds and add more only if you'd like a stronger scent.

Reed Diffuser vs. Candle: What's the Difference?

Candles and reed diffusers create fragrance in different ways.

A candle creates a more intentional moment: you light it when you want to change the atmosphere of a room, then extinguish it when you're finished.

A reed diffuser works quietly in the background. There's no flame and nothing to turn on or off. It continuously releases fragrance into the room, making it particularly useful in spaces where you'd like a consistent scent throughout the day.

Many people use both: a diffuser for an ambient layer of fragrance and a candle when they want a more deliberate ritual.

Choosing a Reed Diffuser Scent

We make our reed diffusers in four of our best-selling fragrances, each with a different character.

Hinoki is fresh, woody and earthy, with Japanese cypress, bergamot, cedar, oakmoss and musk.
